A real no-nonsense educator, Carter applies for job as principal in the series’ very first episode. Although not a member of the board himself, he does provide the school with experience, enthusiasm and, if the situation demands, a bull whip.
Sasha got her start as a teacher, and though she had some conflict with the board in the past due to her more progressive leanings, she ran and was elected as a member because of her spirited nature and willingness for new ideas. A self-proclaimed yogurt aficionado, she seems slightly smitten whenever Wes enters the room.
Ethel has been in education for a very long time. She has seen a lot in her 30-plus years and knows what it takes to keep a school board running, even if she does occasionally forget that it isn't 1954.
Susan is a mother (and best friend) of a wonderful daughter in the Upshot County School District. She takes her duties as a mother very seriously, and makes every effort to look out for the students of her district in all decisions, especially ones that might impact her precious little girl.
Nelson is a former student and football star of Harrison High, and the newest member of the Upshot County School Board. He wants to make a difference in his community and sees the chance to create and over see policy decisions on the school board as the fast track to changing students' lives. He has a sixpack, but it's of Bud.
Wes is a straight-laced, well-mannered, former teacher turned superintendent. He feels constantly overlooked by the rest of the board and continuously attempts to expand the minds and opportunities of his co-workers and the school district as a whole.
